Sviyazhsk is an ancient town founded in 1551 on the banks of the Volga. Throughout its history, it has been a center of Russian colonization and Orthodoxy in the Volga region, a district town of the Kazan province, the easternmost point of Soviet Russia during the Civil War, a prison, a correctional school, and a psychiatric hospital during the USSR. Since 1957, due to the creation of the Kuybyshev Reservoir, the town is located on an island. In the 2010s, its museification began.
